Advocacy initiatives of Shiree

How can we inspire people to join us in our mission to eradicate extreme poverty from Bangladesh? How can we influence stakeholders to facilitate sustainable positive changes that will benefit the extreme poor? What does it take to bring about change? Knowledge. Awareness of a problem. Creative and effective alternatives. Motivation. Capacity. Resources. Empowerment through collaboration.

shiree’s advocacy strategy is about catalysing change in policy and practice to improve the lives of the extreme poor. This strategy is not an end in itself nor is it an ‘add on’. It is an integral component of the programme itself, increasing the impact, outreach and sustainability of shiree partner interventions. It is a process through which bridges are built to create opportunities. Based on the implementation experience of partner organisations, the strategy reflects the interests of 200,000 extremely poor households across Bangladesh.

Extremely poor people have suffered high degrees of chronic and severe deprivation. Their low income is linked to societal exclusion as well as a lack of employment and secured shelter, low caloric intake, low literacy-rates, inaccessibility to credit and social safety nets and low community involvement and decision-making. Women, the elderly, the disabled and minority groups are disproportionately high among the extreme poor. These people are not in a position to advocate for citizen rights, basic services or support from stakeholders. They are not in a position to advocate for resources or actions to improve their conditions. They need others to help raise their voices.

shiree, with its programme-based experience, multiple partners and huge number of extreme poor beneficiaries, is well-positioned to lead a strong and legitimate advocacy effort to create change and achieve sustainable poverty reduction.
