Key Aspects

  • The aim of this project is to combat the lack of income opportunities for the extreme poor through agriculture due to the scarcity and lack of access to land/water bodies as well as a lack of appropriate knowledge;
  • The basic component is to improve livelihoods through the generation of employment opportunities;
  • Development/strengthening of technical skills (dissemination of agricultural innovations) allowing BHH to produce new products year round;
  • Addressing nutritional needs of BHH through the introduction of short duration and cold resistant rice varieties;
  • Development of marketing skills and linkages with market actors that will increase access to markets at fair prices for BHH;
  • Provision of inputs and working capital (cash and asset transfers) to the BHH to start new agricultural activities and develop skills;
  • Development of organisational skills and linkages to service providers;
  • The graduation path will include two milestones: Cycle 1 (initial 18 months) of the project will see the majority of the BHHs with increased production and access to new markets enabling them to gradually increase their income. Cycle 2 (total 36 months) will see a minimum of ninety percent (average 5 members per HH) of BHHs increase their monthly income to BDT4,000.

Outputs

  • Increased economic empowerment;
  • Enhanced social capital;
  • Improved access to services, resources and markets;
  • Improved food security.
